La biodiversité des oiseaux nicheurs et de leurs biotopes

Biodiversity of nesting birds and their biotopes As a public exercise of recent date, ornithology has a valuable inventory element, allowing biodiversity to be demonstrated in a more refined way than the empirical "richness" (specific, generic etc.). Some examples are presented at different biogeographical levels ; the results give the bird fauna a category of ecological indicator for plant associations and countryside, linked to our proper understanding of the environment. Generally, the observation of the evolution of avian biodiversity is that of a qualified equilibrium, in the absence of a clear "positive", with extensions mostly outweighing decreases. One third of the bird fauna of Rhone-Alpes is spreading compared with a quarter for France ; at the same national level, they are close for decreases, as well as in the Dombes, an area subject to agro-cynegetic syndrome. Where Rhone-Alpes outweighs this is at a lower regression rate (less than half that of other areas) and by its extension rate. In different biogeographical or human contexts (Dombes, Vanoise), avian biodiversity and its evolution is explained differently depending on the groups : ducks vs. herons, galliformes vs. birds of prey. The reasons are complex, depending on ecological and anthropic features, but also on luck and the dynamism of the birds concerned. About methodology : To encompass biodiversity the ornithologist encounters two methodological difficulties : simple species lists allowing comparison (presence / absence) of similar sites from which can be established a qualitative classification. Conversely, there is a more fundamental management vision which requires quantitative data, certainly more useful, but costly and/or delicate to obtain. A double comparison, semi-quantitative, can be suggested : duplication of data at the same site allowing an estimation of species frequency ; the gathering of indices of (relative) abundance allows comparison of distinct sites, all things being equal. Another problem is to harmonise the information with data from other disciplines, to arrive at a biocenotic level of biodiversity. A choice has to be made according to the aims, the context, the means and the character of each.L'ornithologie bénéficie d'une certaine commodité d'inventaire, permettant d'illustrer le concept de biodiversité déjà largement mis en œuvre sous la forme plus empirique de «richesse» (spécifique, générique, etc.). Des exemples sont présentés à divers niveaux biogéographiques ; les résultats accordent à l'avifaune un caractère d'indicateur écologique pour les formations végétales et les paysages, rejoignant notre propre perception de l'environnement. Globalement, le constat évolutif de biodiversité avienne est qualifiable d'équilibré, à défaut d'être «franchement positif », les progressions l'emportant généralement sur les régressions. Les progressions concernent le tiers de l'avifaune en Rhône-Alpes et seulement le quart en France ; au même niveau national, elles sont voisines des régressions, ainsi qu'en Dombes, district soumis au syndrome agro-cynégétique. Mais où Rhône-Alpes l'emporte, c'est par un niveau de régression inférieur de moitié environ à celui des autres niveaux, et par son taux de progression. Dans divers contextes biogéographiques et humains (Dombes, Vanoise), la biodiversité avienne et son évolution s'expriment très différemment selon les groupes : Canards vs Hérons ; Galliformes vs Rapaces diurnes. Les causes sont complexes, dépendant de paramètres écologiques et anthropiques, mais aussi du hasard ou d'un dynamisme propre aux oiseaux concernés. A propos de méthodologie : Pour cerner la biodiversité, l'ornithologue rencontre deux difficultés méthodologiques : de simples listes spécifiques permettent aisément de comparer (en présence / absence) plusieurs situations homologues et d'en déduire un classement qualitatif. Inversement, des visées plus fondamentales ou gestionnaires exigent des relevés quantitatifs, certes plus instructifs mais d'obtention coûteuse et / ou délicate. Un double compromis, «semi-quantitatif», peut être proposé : la multiplication des relevés dans une même station permet d'accéder à la fréquence de ses espèces ; l'obtention d'indices (relatifs) d'abondance autorise la comparaison de stations distinctes, toutes choses voisines par ailleurs. Un autre problème est d'harmoniser les relevés puis les données avec d'autres disciplines, pour accéder aux niveaux biocénotiques de la biodiversité.
