Three-quarters of a century before, George Cœdès showed that eight of the terms in the Khmer duodecimal cycle were related to the usual names of the corresponding animals in Muong (a dialect close to Vietnamese). Today, one can assert that the twelve terms of the whole cycle, including 'year', are borrowed from Old Vietnamese. For each term, we compare modern forms, epigraphic occurrences and reconstructions in the concerned languages. Substitutions of animal names are highlighted.
