Late in 1662, Colbert closed down the three mints of Bearn (Pau, Morlaàs and Saint-Palais), in response to the refusal of their masters to abide by the demands of central authorities in Paris. However, thanks to powerful interventions, the Bearnese were granted the re-opening of two mints : Pau in March 1663, Saint-Palais in November the same year, Morlaàs remaining definitively closed down. With this re-opening, the mints’ autonomy was substantially reduced : from then on, they were subject to the Kingdom’s legislation. Nevertheless, they kept several privileges : the Chambre des Comptes in Pau was maintained, keeping several privileges. Saint-Palais ceased minting in 1672.
