Les affaires de Monsieur Asiaticus

Mr Asiaticus’ Affairs. Understanding the ambiguous figure of Senator Viennese Valerius Asiaticus, COS. 35 and 46, can now be better achieved by cross-examining ancient texts with recent archaeological excavations. The latter were carried out by the French School of Rome between 1981 and 2005 on the site of the ancient gardens of Lucullus (Trinita’ dei Monti and Villa Medici). Interpreting Tacitus on this basis allows us to see how the major works, which he referred to, could explain Valerius Asiaticus’ will to conquer the Imperial throne, linking himself closely to the figure of Augustus and claiming the protection of Jupiter. It could help to explain the disgrace of this great character, condemned to voluntary suicide in 47 AD.Le croisement des informations transmises par les sources anciennes et par les fouilles archéologiques menées par l’École française de Rome entre 1981 et 2005 sur le site des anciens jardins de Lucullus (Trinité-des-Monts et villa Médicis) permet de mieux comprendre la figure ambiguë du sénateur viennois Valerius Asiaticus, cos. 35 et 46. Les grands travaux auxquels fait allusion Tacite peuvent aujourd’hui être interprétés comme un formidable instrument de conquête du trône impérial, étroitement lié à la figure d’Auguste et placé sous la protection de Jupiter.
