Mr Asiaticus’ Affairs. Understanding the ambiguous figure of Senator Viennese Valerius Asiaticus, COS. 35 and 46, can now be better achieved by cross-examining ancient texts with recent archaeological excavations. The latter were carried out by the French School of Rome between 1981 and 2005 on the site of the ancient gardens of Lucullus (Trinita’ dei Monti and Villa Medici). Interpreting Tacitus on this basis allows us to see how the major works, which he referred to, could explain Valerius Asiaticus’ will to conquer the Imperial throne, linking himself closely to the figure of Augustus and claiming the protection of Jupiter. It could help to explain the disgrace of this great character, condemned to voluntary suicide in 47 AD.Le croiseme...
