During the reign of Hadrian (117-138 AD), many cities in the Peloponnese issued bronze coins. The portrait of the emperor features on the obverse and a civic design on the reverse. Among those issuing coins were the Eleans (from Elis, Roman province of Achaia), who administered the sanctuary of Olympia.
