Two classes of widely studied luminescent metal complexes are octahedral d<sup>6</sup> (i.e., Ir<sup>3+</sup>) and square planar d<sup>8</sup> (i.e., Pt<sup>2+</sup>) polypyridyl complexes, which have distinctly different photophysics and photoreactivity.
