The two main planter's guides published in Brazil in the first half of the 19th century - one written by Carlos Augusto Taunay (1837) and another by Francisco Peixoto de Lacerda Werneck (1847) - inaugurated in the agronomic literature a new approach to the problem of the management of the slave labour. This article analyses the precepts of this new approach and tries to give an explanation about the origin of this exceptional attitude concerning the management of the slave labour
