This article discusses the narrative manipulations which have been established as a typical trait in postmodern, contemporary literature, through which literary tradition has been criticized and reformulated by the production of new works of a hybrid genre which are also self-reflexive in respect to its acknowledging its own status as fiction. An example of such a work is the novel Atonement by English writer Ian McEwan (2003), which has been chosen here as the object of our analysis.
