The β-catenin pathway plays an important role in the progression of colon cancer as well as many other cancer types. Almost all colorectal tumors show an upregulation of β-catenin activity either through mutations in the β-catenin regulator APC or through mutations in β-catenin itself. Upregulation of β-catenin leads to the transcription of many target genes involved in tumorigenesis. NF-κB is a transcription factor which activates many target genes, including both anti-apoptotic and pro-apoptotic molecules.
