Chronic inflammation leading to pulmonary fibrosis develops in response to environmental pollutants, radiotherapy, or certain cancer chemotherapeutic agents. Studies have shown that several cell types accumulate during the inflammatory process, but little information is known about what actually triggers and stimulates persistent inflammation culminating in fibrosis.
