Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), the rate-limiting enzyme in polyamine biosynthesis exists as two major and one minor ionic form in the macrophage cell line, RAW 264. The forms have the same molecular weight, 55,000, but differ in their isoelectric points, 5.2, 5.1, and 4.9-5.0. The hypothesis that phosphorylation accounts for the differences in the two major ionic forms and that phosphorylation is involved in the regulation of enzyme activity was investigated.
