Marine biotoxins are correlated with proliferation of harmful algal blooms (HABs) and can accumulate in seafood products, with severe consequences both on fishery industry and consumer health. Recently, an increase of HABs occurred worldwide due to climate change or anthropogenic activities such as discharge of nutrients from domestic and industrial waste, shellfish translocation and global shipping. Different types of food poisoning are described, i.e. Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP), Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP), Neurologic Shellfish Poisoning (NSP), Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning, (PSP) and Ciguatera Fish Poisoning (CFP).
