In April 2017, Uppsala University Campus Gotland performed an archaeological investigation at Västergarn, 25 kilometers southwest of Visby, as part of an advanced field course in archaeology. In total, two trenches and one test pit were investigated, covering an area of 59m 2. The purpose of the investigation was to, by using a non-invasive investigation method, to trace whether or not the Viking Age/early Medieval settlement that earlier excavations has shown to exist extended further to the north within the semi-circular wall area. The results show that there are good reasons to assume that the settlement that was active here between ca AD 1050-1400 had a larger extension within the wall than previously known.
