The next generation (5G) mobile and wireless communications system is expectedto start its deployment in 2020. The 5G system will include various newlydeveloped technologies and enable new applications, among which, for instance,are device-to-device (D2D) communications, and various techniques for Internetof things (IoT). This thesis project aims to develop techniques for connectingsmartphones with small devices (suited for IoT) and for connecting smartphoneto smartphone (suited for D2D communications), using Bluetooth and IEEE802.15.4 ultra wideband (UWB) wireless communications protocols.
