This chapter reviews the pre-exposure effect, the finding that exposing individuals to tempting foods in a context where they do not consume the foods, reduces their subsequent free consumption of similar tempting foods. The chapter describes what is known about the effect and proceeds with discussing the potential underlying mechanisms. The discussion sets it apart from seemingly similar phenomena ,and identifies a series of open research questions about the effect and its potential as an element of behavioral change interventions. The relation between the pre-exposure effect and nudges is discussed from a behavioral engineering approach.status: publishe
