Between Movement and Form

A presentation in three parts Part 1: Brief explication of the drawing method and its history (5min). Part 2: The making of a drawing on (min A1 size) white paper by means of a pencil and six cardboard forms. The drawing act is executed on a table (10min). Part 3: The making of an enlargement of the drawing I made in part 2. This drawing will be made with a pencil that is attached to a long stick and will be drawn on paper or cardboard placed on the ground. Approximately 4m x 5m (10min) Thespace Your wishes for the presentation space? A space big enough so that people can stand or sit around the ‘stage’ that I define for my presentation. Technical demands for the presentation Conventional presentation equipment is available, additional requests can be considered to a limited degree. What I would need is strong white paper or brown/white cardboard to lay on the ground and be fixed with tape approx. 4m x 5m. Maybe some part (of the paper or cardboard) will be attached to the wall too. In the middle of the zone I need an ordinary table. This table needs to be covered with paper or cardboard too.For this presentation I want to present a live demonstration of some aspects of a drawing method. I want to do this to push the limits of the drawing method in search for a new understanding of the relation between the movement of the drawing act and the forms that arise in the drawings Over the last years I investigated the form qualities of ordinary second hand furniture parts by setting up a drawing method consisting of tracing furniture parts with a pencil on paper. I explored the form qualities of the pencil lines and how the forms of the tracings connect and overlap. By demonstrating various aspects of the drawing method, the relation between the act of drawing and the quality of the drawing itself is being communicated. The physical act and its spatial quality can be valued on the spot in relation to the two-dimensionality of the drawing. I investigate the movement of drawing in relation to form. To do this I will withdraw some elements of the drawing method and ad new criteria. This will allow me to draw more excessive and elaborate the physical and performative aspects of the drawing process First the heavy marbles and mirrors are replaced by cardboard forms with the same form and size. The lightness of the forms now allows for a excessive and dynamic tracing. A generic form principle is elaborated. Secondly I want to give the drawing act more space. To do this I will not trace furniture forms, but draw an enlargement of a tracing drawing. The paper is enlarged, the forms of the lines are larger, the movements are larger and more physical.
