Note:The sentence-picture verification paradigm was used to assess encoding and verification skill of fourth graders at three reading comprehension levels. This task provides a measure of the speed of transforming stimuli into internal representation (encoding) and the speed and accuracy of comparisons between stimuli presented in different modalities (verification), two cognitive functions necessary for effective comprehension. Less skilled comprehenders, while efficient encoders of nonverbal stimuli, were less efficient than better comprehenders at encoding verbal material.
