Effects of acute exposures to ozone on the lung

Note:Symptoms and changes in pulmonary function of healthy subjects exposed to ozone (0.37 - 0.75 ppm for 2 hours) in an environmental chamber under conditions of rest or intermittent light bicycle exercise were assessed. There was individual variability in both symptomatology (substernal soreness, cough, pharyngitis, dyspnea and wheezing) and functional changes (Ptpmax, RL, Cdyn, VC, FEV1.0, MMFR, V5O%VC, v25%VC, % CO uptake, slope of phase III). Responses increased with concentration and at any given concentration, performance of intermittent exercise during exposure resulted in significantly greater functional changes. Significant correlations were demonstrated between pulmonary function change and the effective dose of ozone (relative amount of ozone breathed adjusted for differences in ventilation between resting and intermittent exercise exposures). Acute exposures to ozone induce physiologic changes, irritant in nature and produce local or reflex constriction in large and small airways, together with possibly some interstitial edema.Les symptômes et changements de fonction pulmonaire chez des sujets bien portants exposes à l'ozone (0. 37 - 0.75 ppm pendant 2 heures) dans une chambre à environnement réglé sous des conditions de repos ou d'exercice à bicyclette léger intermittent ont été déterminés. Il y a eu de la variabilité individuelle et dans la symptomatologie (endolorissement sous-sternal, toux, phayngite, dyspnée et respiration asthmatique), et dans les changements fonctionnels (Ptpmax, RL, Cdyn, VC, FEV1.O, MMFR, V5O%VC, V25%VC, % d'appel de CO, pente de la IIIème phase). Les réactions ont accru selon la concentration, et à une concentration donnée, l'exécution de l'exercice intermittent pendant l'exposition a eu pour résultat une augmentation considérable de changements fonctionnels. Des corrélations notables ont été découvertes entre les changements de fonction pulmonaire et la dose effective d'ozone (la quantité relative d'ozone respire a été variée selon les changements de ventilation pendant les expositions sous conditions de repos et les expositions sous conditions d'exercice intermittent).
