Note:Magnesium is used for the desulphurization of iron from the blast furnace, yet the kinetic reaction mechanism is unknown. In order to calculate the specific dissolution rate from the magnesium bubbles, a preliminary study was conducted on argon bubble formation in 60 kg heats of carbon-saturated iron at 1523 K. The frequency of bubble formation was measured over a wide range of variables. Supplementary information from X-ray cinematographic observations in a low temperature alloy (indium-gallium), enabled the postulation of a mechanism for bubble formation in liquid metals.
