CDC\u2019s Investments to Combat Antibiotic Resistance Threats Nationwide : South Dakota

$384,498 Funding for AR Activities Fiscal Year 2017Funding to local health departments:$353,712 - RAPID DETECTION & RESPONSE to emerging drug-resistant germs is critical to contain the spread of these infections. With 2016 funding, South Dakota\u2019s HAI/AR program and state public health lab collaborated for a timely response to two outbreaks of the \u201cnightmare bacteria\u201d CRE. The HAI/AR program worked with regional partners and bordering state HAI/AR and lab programs to facilitate the response.$30,786 - FOOD SAFETY projects protect communities by rapidly identifying drug-resistant foodborne bacteria to stop and solve outbreaks and improve prevention. South Dakota implemented whole genome sequencing of Listeria, Salmonella, Campylobacter and E. coli isolates submitted to its lab and began uploading sequence data into PulseNet for nationwide monitoring of outbreaks and trends. In Fiscal Year 2018, South Dakota will begin simultaneously monitoring these isolates for resistance genes.
