Since the introduction of World Heritage in 1972, players on the national and international stage have become increasingly involved in heritage preservation. Heritage in Transition examines how local, national and international governments and organisations interact with each other in the field of heritage. This dissertation analyses controversies surrounding six UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany and the United Kingdom. The study reveals important differences between the decentralised German and the centralised British approach to heritage preservation. These differences not only have consequences for heritage preservation in these countries, but also for their relationship with international organisations such as UNESCO
