En épocas pasadas han existido mujeres que ejercieron el poder político, pero no por una igualdad de derechos con los hombres, sino porque diversas circunstancias las han llevado a ejercerlo, ya sea por ser herederas, viudas, madres y/o esposas en el papel de regentes. Entre estas, sobresalió Leonor de Aquitania que, por las circunstancias de su vida, por la época, por su carácter y educación, desempeñó un papel político decisivo en la Europa occidental del siglo XII.In past epochs women who held political power did not do so because they enjoyed equal power but due to diverse circumstances, such as being heiresses, widows, mothers and/or wives in the position of regents.
