EFFECTS ON TOOTH ENAMEL BY USING THREE DIFFERENT STRIPPING METHODS

Objetivo: comparar los efectos sobre el esmalte dental al utilizar tres métodos de Reducción Interproximal de Esmalte (RIE). Materiales y métodos: estudio experimental in vitro. Se analizaron veinte premolares divididos en cuatro grupos, un grupo control y tres experimentales a los que se les realizó RIE, utilizando lijas metálicas, fresas y discos de diamante. Se evaluaron las características superficiales con microscopía electrónica de barrido, rugosímetro y prueba de dureza Vickers. Resultados: las diferencias entre los valores de los tres métodos de RIE, para los parámetros evaluados, no fueron estadísticamente significativas. La RIE promedio con los tres métodos fue de 0,38 mm por diente, siendo mayor con disco y fresa. Con la microscopía electrónica de barrido se observó mayor irregularidad superficial en el grupo de lija metálica. Para la prueba con el rugosímetro, las superficies tratadas con fresa presentaron mayor rugosidad (Ra= 0,54 ± 0,20), valor estadísticamente significativo comparado con el grupo control (P= 0,001). Para la prueba de microdureza, las superficies que presentaron mayor valor fueron las tratadas con fresa (365 ± 26,9). Conclusiones: todas las superficies tratadas mostraron alteración morfológica y aumento en la rugosidad, especialmente cuando el desgaste se realizó con fresa y con lija metálica. Objective: the goal of this study is to compare the effects on tooth enamel by using three stripping methods. Materials and methods: experimental in-vitro study. Twenty premolars were analyzed, divided in four groups, one control group and other three experimental groups in which stripping was made using diamond-coated metal strips, fine diamond bur, and fine diamond disks. Surface features were assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), roughness test (Ra) and micro-hardness test (Hardness Vickers, HV). Results: differences among values from three stripping methods weren’t statistically significant. Average reduction to these three methods was 0.38 mm by tooth, being greater with disc and bur; otherwise SEM reported greater surface irregularity in group of diamond-coated metal strip. For roughness test the surfaces using fine diamond bur reported greater roughness average (Ra= 0.54 ± 0.20), a value statistically significant compared to control group (p= 0.001). For micro-hardness test the surfaces with greater values were those ones using diamond bur (365 ± 26.9). Conclusions: all the worked surfaces were morphologically altered and an increased roughness, especially the stripping applied with fine diamond bur and diamond-coated metal strip
