Establishing a reproduction center of Ptrophyllum Scalare (Angel fish)

Introduction: P. Scalare is a fish species with a great potential, given its beauty and number of varieties, facts that makes it be one of the most demanded in the market. Objective: Reproducting P. Scalare, determining the water’s physical and chemical parameters under which this species reproduces. Materials and methods: 20 fish were studied when they were approximately 3 months old, and they were put into a 122 litter’s tank. They were fed with dry food in flakes, provided twice a day, once n the morning and another time in the afternoon. A photo period of 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness was kept. Every week the temperature, the pH index, the dissolved oxygen and the ammonium were measured. Results: The optimal parameters for the P. Scalare reproduction were: A temperature media of 29+/- 1° C, a pH of 7.5+/- 0.5 and the dissolved oxygen kept itself between 3-5mg/lt. Several behaviors of the parents with the eggs were observed, such as eating the eggs or protecting them. Conclusion: To achieve the reproduction of P. scalare in captivity is necessary to control the physical and chemical conditions of the water and feed them with a diet that fulfills all of their nutritional requirements.Introducción: P. scalare es una especie de gran potencial económico dada su belleza y número de variedades, convirtiéndolo en uno de los peces que presenta mayor demanda en el mercado. Objetivo: Reproducir P. scalare, determinando los parámetros físico químicos del agua a los que la especie logra la reproducción. Materiales y métodos: Se estudiaron 20 peces de una edad aproximada de 3 meses, los cuales fueron instalados en un acuario con capacidad para 122 lt. Los animales fueron alimentados con alimento seco en hojuelas dividido en dos raciones, una en la mañana y la otra en la tarde, se mantuvo un fotoperíodo de 12 horas luz y 12 horas oscuridad. Semanalmente se midió la temperatura, pH, oxígeno disuel to y presencia de amonio. Resultados: Los parámetros óptimos para la reproducción de P. scalare fueron: temperatura promedio 29+/- 1° C, pH de 7.5+/- 0.5 y el oxígeno disuelto se mantuvo entre 3-5mg/lt. Se observaron diferentes comportamientos con las posturas como: consumo de los huevos o cuidado de las posturas. Conclusión: Para lograr su reproducción en cautiverio es necesario controlar los parámetros físicoquímicos del agua además de suministrar una dieta que supla todos los requerimientos nutricionales
