Comprendre les systèmes de mobilité au Mésolithique l’abri-sous-roche de Pont-Glas à Plounéour-Ménez (Finistère)

International audienceIn an economy based on hunting and gathering in temperate domains, collective mobility appears to be an essential facet of economic behaviour for humans during Prehistory. In order to contribute to the definition of the archaeological forms of collective mobility in the scope of a programme on the functioning of Mesolithic societies in Brittany, it seemed essential to record a rock shelter occupation, liable to offer a different spectrum of activities to the large, now well-known sites. The Pont-Glas rock shelter at Plounéour-Ménez (Finistère) provides good conditions for assessing this question. Two granite blocks leaning against each other protect a surface of about twenty square metres, forming a cavity of about fifteen square metres with two (east and west) entrances. A recently fallen granite block initially closed the shelter and facilitated the installation of a cover. This shelter was discovered and surveyed by M. Le Goffic in 1987, who recognized a reworked level containing flint from the Final Mesolithic and Gallic pottery, above stones described as “paving”. In 2007 and 2008, the whole shelter was excavated. The very narrow western entrance does not contain any traces of human occupations or circulation, but the shelter itself contains a carefully paved hearth with eroded edges (structure 1), then about fifteen centimetres lower down, a spread of charcoal probably corresponding to a flat hearth (structure 2). In the same place, but in another Mesolithic SU lower down, the substratum is directly affected by trampling, indicating another zone of human occupation (structure 3). This sequence only extends over a thickness of half a metre and contains various disturbances. However, after the spatial analysis of the remains, it appears clear that the base of the arenaceous SU (lower SU 5.3, 5.6, 5.9) corresponds to the Mesolithic occupation, with hardly any traces of protohistoric disturbances. The spatial analysis of the remains reveals several interesting insights, in spite of the very marked disturbance of the site by humans and burrowing animals. We observe a concentration of lithic objects under block 2, with a partial time lag between the early and recent Mesolithic elements. Surprisingly, this distinction is also perceptible from a vertical perspective, with a lot of interference linked to reworking. In the same way, the La Tene pottery is confined to the upper SU, if we exclude the intrusions along blocks resulting from wall effects. The lithic material consists of 998 elements and includes an early component from the 8th millennium with narrow scalene triangles, narrow backed bladelets and points with retouched bases, and a recent component with symmetric trapezes. The latter dates from the second half of the sixth millennium before our era, as confirmed by a date on charcoal from the last level. A small pick in microquartzite from Forest-Landerneau evokes the Mesolithic groups from Lower Normandy and from the Paris Basin from the 8th millennium before our era; this is the first prismatic tool discovered in Brittany. The analysis of the chaînes opératoires shows a wide diversity of rocks and the rarity of the initial debitage phases, whereas arrow head repair phases are very well represented. The anthracological analysis focused on four stratigraphic units: SU 5.6, 5.10/6 and 5.11, attributed to the Mesolithic, and the upper part of SU 5.3 dating from the Second Iron Age. The environment contemporaneous with the occupations of the rock shelter is an acidophile oak stand with holly. However, the observed taxonomic associations reveal incursions in other types of environments. It thus seems likely that the wood was selected for specific uses. In the Mesolithic stratigraphic units, the observation of small charcoals with a last growth ring made up solely of initial wood points to a springtime occupation of the shelter. Although the low sedimentary dynamics of a shelter beneath a granite block by no means ensure the integral conservation of occupations, the results obtained are particularly important for understanding the last hunter-gatherer societies. Indeed, it is the first time in the West that fractioned chaînes opératoires in time and space have been observed for the Mesolithic. In addition, the number of armatures destroyed by use is far higher than for large regional Mesolithic settlements. On the basis of these two parameters, Pont-Glas is a unique example of a temporary hunting halt, where several individuals came to repair their arms, before leaving again with their cores and knapped tools.Dans une économie fondée sur la chasse et la collecte en domaine tempéré, la mobilité collective apparait alors comme un comportement économique essentiel pour les humains de la Préhistoire. Afin de contribuer à la définition de ses formes archéologiques et dans le cadre d’un programme sur le fonctionnement des sociétés mésolithiques en Bretagne, il a semblé nécessaire de documenter une occupation en abri-sous-roche, susceptible d’offrir un autre spectre d’activités que les grands sites désormais mieux connus. L’abri-sous-roche de Pont-Glas (Plounéour-Ménez, Finistère) proposait de bonnes conditions pour aborder cette problématique. Deux blocs de granite appuyés l’un contre l’autre offrent une protection à une surface d’une vingtaine de mètres carrés, ménageant une cavité à deux entrées (est et ouest) d’une surface d’une quinzaine de m². Un bloc de granite débité récemment fermait un peu à l’origine cet abri et devait faciliter l’installation d’une couverture. Cet abri a été découvert et sondé en 1987 par M. Le Goffic, qui y reconnut un niveau remanié contenant des silex du Mésolithique final et de la céramique gauloise, au-dessus d’un empierrement qualifié de « dallage ». En 2007 et 2008, la totalité de l’abri a été fouillé. Si l’entrée occidentale, très étroite, n’a visiblement jamais été concernée par les occupations humaines ni même les circulations, l’abri lui-même a livré un foyer soigneusement empierré aux bords hélas érodés (structure 1), puis une quinzaine de centimètres plus bas un épandage de charbon correspondant probablement à un foyer à plat (structure 2) Au même endroit mais dans une US du Mésolithique encore plus basse, une zone de piétinement affectant directement le substrat ; elle témoigne également de l’occupation humaine (structure 3). Cette séquence ne se développe que sur un demi-mètre d’épaisseur et les perturbations sont nombreuses. Au terme de l’analyse spatiale des vestiges, il apparaît cependant évident que la base des US arénacées (US 5.3 inférieure, 5.6, 5.9) correspond à l’occupation mésolithique sans guère de perturbations protohistoriques. L’analyse spatiale des vestiges révèle quelques lignes de force intéressantes, malgré la très forte perturbation des lieux par les hommes et les animaux fouisseurs. On constate ainsi la concentration des pièces lithiques sous le bloc 2, avec un décalage partiel entre les composantes ancienne et récente du Mésolithique. Cette distinction est également perceptible contre toute attente dans la dimension verticale, avec évidemment un fort brouillage lié aux remaniements. De la même manière, la céramique laténienne se cantonne aux US supérieures, si l’on écarte des intrusions le long des blocs au gré des effets de paroi. Fort de 998 éléments, le matériel lithique comprend une composante ancienne (8ème millénaire), avec des triangles scalènes étroits, des lamelles à dos étroites et des pointes à base retouchée, et une composante récente à trapèzes symétriques. La date de cette dernière dans la seconde moitié du sixième millénaire avant notre ère est confirmée par une datation sur charbon prise dans le dernier niveau. Un petit pic en microquartzite de la Forest-Landerneau évoque immanquablement les groupes mésolithiques de Basse-Normandie et du Bassin parisien du 8ème millénaire avant notre ère ; c’est le premier outil prismatique découvert en Bretagne. L’analyse des chaînes opératoires montre une grande diversité de roches et la rareté des phases initiale du débitage, tandis que les étapes de réfection d’armature de flèches sont très bien représentées. L'analyse anthracologique a porté sur quatre unités stratigraphiques : les US 5.6, 5.10/6 et 5.11, attribuées mésolithiques, et l'US 5.3 datant du second Age du Fer pour sa partie supérieure. L'environnement végétal contemporain des occupations de l'abri-sous-roche est une chênaie acidiphile à houx. Les cortèges taxonomiques observés révèlent toutefois des incursions dans des milieux d'autres types. Il semble ainsi vraisemblable que les bois ont été sélectionnés pour des usages spécifiques. Dans les unités stratigraphiques datant du Mésolithique, l'observation de charbons de petit calibre comportant un dernier cerne de croissance composé uniquement de bois initial suggère une occupation de l'abri au printemps. Si la faible dynamique sédimentaire d’un abri sous bloc de granite ne garantit nullement la préservation intégrale des occupations, les résultats obtenus sont particulièrement importants pour la compréhension des dernières sociétés de chasseurs cueilleurs. C’est en effet la première fois dans l’Ouest que l’on peut distinguer des chaînes opératoires mésolithiques fractionnées dans l’espace et le temps. Par ailleurs, le nombre d’armatures détruites par l’usage dépasse largement ce que l’on connaît sur les grands habitats mésolithiques régionaux. Ces deux paramètres feraient de Pont-Glas un exemple unique de halte de chasse temporaire, sur laquelle quelques individus viendraient réparer leurs armes, avant de repartir en emportant le plus souvent leurs nucleus et leurs outils de taille
