Pentecostalism and periphery: an ethnography on Pentecostalism and the symbolic creation in peripheral spaces of Pelotas, RS.

The present ethnographic study deals with the relations established between Pentecostalism and the urban periphery context in the city of Pelotas, RS, illustrating some aspects of the cultural invention resulting from the dialectics of religion and civility. Thus, Pentecostalism in the periphery is considered as a religious phenomenon that acquires specific characteristics within the wide spectrum of Pentecostal religious manifestations. The present research is situated, therefore, within the field of religion, being articulated in two main axes: Pentecostal religiosity and the context of urban periphery. Then, after showing some theoretical and methodological paths of the present research, I seek to expose the ethnographic data through two forms of observation that constitute some distinct heuristic contributions to the Pentecostal phenomenon in the periphery: a panoramic look as well as a more located look. In the final part, I comment on the poetics of the movement that constitutes the discourse and religious practices regarding the genesis, formation, and propagation of Pentecostal communities, which evidences the formation of some regularities strongly related to the dynamics of residing in the peripheryO presente estudo etnográfico versa sobre as relações que se estabelecem entre o pentecostalismo e o contexto de periferia urbana na cidade de Pelotas/RS, demonstrando alguns aspectos da invenção cultural resultantes da dialética da religião com a urbanidade. Sendo assim, considera-se o pentecostalismo na periferia como um fenômeno religioso que adquire características específicas dentro do amplo espectro das manifestações religiosas pentecostais. A presente pesquisa se situa, portanto, dentro do campo da religião, articulando-se dentro de dois eixos principais: a religiosidade pentecostal e o contexto de periferia urbana. Para tanto, depois de evidenciar alguns trajetos teórico-metodológicos da pesquisa, procuro expor os dados etnográficos através de duas formas de observação que constituem distintas contribuições heurísticas para o fenômeno pentecostal na periferia: um olhar panorâmico e um olhar mais localizado. Na parte final, discorro sobre uma poética do movimento que estrutura o discurso e as práticas religiosas no que se refere à gênese, formação e reprodução das comunidades pentecostais, evidenciando a formação de algumas regularidades estreitamente relacionadas à dinâmica do habitar na periferia
