The implementation of elementary school in Sweden and focus on Hyltinge parish, 1842-1880

After approximately 40 years of discussions and investigations the Government finally decided, in year 1842, that the old-time elementary school would be introduced in Sweden. Each parish in Sweden would have at least one school and a validated teacher. The school would have been introduced within five years. The parish itself had to solve the question of the economy, to build up the school and fix the organization of the old-time elementary school. This study illustrates as a background how and why the old-time elementary school is introduced in Sweden. The central study aims to show how the old-time elementary school's introduction was done in a specific parish - Hyltinge parish in Södermanland, approximately 100 kilometer south Stockholm. A parish with a big castle surrounded of farmers and crofters. Definitely a parish with a poor population. The poverty in itself constituted the biggest obstacle in order to implement the old-time elementary school. A process that came to take at least 40 years before the school functioned properly and in line with the state's aim.
