In most part of the 17th century, two villages, only seperated two and a half kilometres from each other developed seperatly and in diametrically different directions. One was called Motala köping, the other one Motala verkstad socken. From 1823 to 1850 Motala Köping was living in the shadow of the other village. With inhibitants mostly consisting of poor vagrants and petty criminals it was hard for the rulers of the village to attract rich merchants and developers to invest, let alone move there.
