The sensitivity of catalytic reactions to concurrent filtration and fines deposition in trickle-bed reactors (TBRs) was assessed by means of the catalytic hydrogenation of α-methylstyrene from kaolin–kerosene suspension flows. A negative correlation between catalytic conversion and the specific deposit of the bed resulted from the extra mass-transfer step that built up on the collectors in the course of filtration. The severity of the evolving extra mass-transfer step was sensitive to deposit compaction resulting from higher gas superficial velocities.
