Rescue of <i>D. melanogaster/D. mauritiana</i> hybrid male lethality by <i>D. melanogaster Lhr⁻</i> deletions.

<p><i>D. melanogaster</i> females with the designated deletions were mated to <i>D. mauritiana</i> males at 18°. The small number of live males recovered are likely patroclinous exceptions, that is <i>X^mau/O</i>. Pharate adults were scored after all adults had eclosed. “Estimated pharate male viability” was calculated as number of pharate adult males/number of <i>Df/+</i> females. For crosses with <i>l(2)k01209</i>, pharate adult males displayed the orange-eye color characteristic of <i>Df/+</i>. For crosses with <i>Df(2R)BSC49</i>, the genotypes of the pharate adults could not be determined and were thus assumed to be <i>Df/+</i>. Full genotypes of <i>Lhr⁻</i> deletions are: <i>y¹,w^67c23</i>; <i>P{w^+mC = lacW}l(2)k01209[k08901a]/CyO</i>; <i>Df(2R)BSC49/SM6a</i>; and <i>Df(2R)BSC44/SM6a</i>. All three were previously shown to be deleted for <i>Lhr</i><a href="http://www.plosgenetics.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pgen.1002597#pgen.1002597-Brideau1" target="_blank">[16]</a>. “Other” refers to 45 different <i>Lhr⁺</i> deletions spanning chromosome arm 2R.</p>a<p>Cross produced 3 total males, which were not genotyped for Df or balancer.
