<p>The article debates postmodernism not only as an intellectual phenomenon, but above all as a socio-economic formation. As postwar modernity was thoroughly criticized by the representatives of the middle class during “the 1968 revolt”, their arguments forced global capitalism to reorganize along the lines of the new progressive philosophy of work. Seen from this perspective, postmodernism turns out to be an ideological correlative of post-fordism and globalization. Yet, as time passed and the fatal crisis of capitalism became evident, both the legitimacy of the postmodern critique and the very existence of its social basis came under threat. Thus, postmodernism is exhausted.
