Bis(diphenylphosphino)methane-1-indenylide, 1-C<sub>9</sub>H<sub>6</sub>PPh<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>2</sub>PPh<sub>2</sub> (1-C<sub>9</sub>H<sub>6</sub>dppm, <b>I</b>), has been synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. <b>I</b> reacts with [CpRu(MeCN)<sub>3</sub>]PF<sub>6</sub> to form the conventional sandwich complex [CpRu(η<sup>5</sup>-<b>I</b>)]PF<sub>6</sub> (<b>II</b>), which contains a dangling −PPh<sub>2</sub> group. Complex <b>II</b> isomerizes to the 18-electron species <b>IIIc</b>, in which the dangling −PPh<sub>2</sub> group coordinates to the ruthenium, forcing slippage of the five-membered ring to an unanticipated 1,9,8-η<sup>3</sup>-exo mode of coordination
