<div><h3>Background</h3><p>Gene expression analysis in <em>Leishmania donovani</em> (Ld) identified an orthologue of the urea cycle enzyme, argininosuccinate synthase (LdASS), that was more abundantly expressed in amastigotes than in promastigotes.
