The reaction of Cp*Ir(NHC)Me<sub>2</sub> (<b>Ir-Me</b><sub><b>2</b></sub>) with [CPh<sub>3</sub>]<sup>+</sup>[B(C<sub>6</sub>F<sub>5</sub>)<sub>4</sub>]<sup></sup> in dichloromethane resulted in conversion of the Cp* ligand to an η<sup>6</sup>-tetramethylfulvene ligand via apparent hydride abstraction (Cp* = η<sup>5</sup>-C<sub>5</sub>Me<sub>5</sub>; NHC = 1,3-<i>N</i>,<i>N</i>-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene).
