This dissertation consists of three chapters that investigate how inequalities in health behaviors originate and how they are maintained, using cigarette smoking as a case. In Chapter II, I examine the associations between parental and adult child smoking and consider how they may be modified by the adult child’s socioeconomic attainment and social mobility. Using data collected by the Panel Study of Income Dynamics in 1968, 1986, and 2011, I find that having a smoking parent as a child is associated with a 9 percent to 10 percentage point increase in the probability of smoking as an adult in 1986 and 2011, respectively.
