<p>Aortas were harvested at the time of sacrifice (8-months), fixed in paraformaldehyde and stained with Oil-Red as described in <a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0017263#s2" target="_blank">Methods</a>. Left panels show light microscope view of aortas representative of each condition. Right panels show subtraction images used for plaque quantification by densitometry (the method is described in detail in Ref 49).
