Molluscs are intermediate hosts for helminth parasites such as Schistosoma spp. that possess an immunogenic surface coat of high carbohydrate content, with fucose as the predominant saccharide. More than a decade ago, it was postulated that such components could block receptors on snail haemocytes thus preventing recognition of intra-molluscan schistosome stages.
