<div><p>Background</p><p>Among the <i>Plasmodium</i> species that infect humans, adverse effects of <i>P</i>. <i>falciparum</i> and <i>P</i>. <i>vivax</i> have been extensively studied and reported with respect to poor outcomes particularly in first time mothers and in pregnant women living in areas with unstable malaria transmission.
