The invention describes an improved process for the preparation of low apparent density and bright white alumina trihydrate. The invention consists of addition of alkali solution to aluminium metal followed by precipitation of alumina trihydrate by vigorously stirring with water. Alumina trihydrate was then filtered and dried to get low apparent density and bright white alumina trihydrate powder. The apparent density and particle size are controlled by controlling the reaction rate and the whiteness of alumina trihydrate is due to use of pure Al metal
