A cracked starboard outrigger strut assembly of an aircraft was sent to the laboratory to analyze the cause of failure. Investigation revealed that the tube of the leg sub-assembly had failed by fatigue. The fatigue was of low cycle – high stress type. Misalignment of the sliding tube sub-assembly appears to be the most probable reason for fatigue crack initiation
