Wei yuan and the compilation of the Hai-guo tu-zhi

Four months after the Treaty of Nanking had been signed in 1842 and the Qing Dynasty had been defeated by the British in the Opium War, Wei yuan completed the Hai-guo tu-zhi(Illustrated treatise on the Sea Kingdoms).Since 1820s Wei, who was asked by Lin ze-xu to compile the Hai-guo tu-zhi in 1841,had been studying history and geography of the North-west, Xin-jiang as a scholar of Confucian activist and statecraft reformer. When Jahangir, a descendant of the Kashgar Khojas, invaded the south-western Xin-jiang in 1826 and executed in 1828, Wei began to compile the Sheng-wu ji(the Military history of the Qing Dynasty) which contained history of Xin-jiang up to the invasion of Jahangir
