The high precision radars now in use have demonstrated the need for more exact refraction correction than is afforded by any fixed standard refractive index profile. The precision capabilities are even substantial enough to cause concern over the possible effects of the non-symmetric index distribution which introduces azimuthal errors. However, the indications are that the present limitation on true range measurements are primarily due to limitations on the radar itself, and a gross average correction is adequate for many cases of interest
