To the writer of fiction who has his ear to the ground, the recent multiplication of books in Indian fictional literature in the Southwest offers both a hint and a challenge. For years the growth of Indian fiction in the Southwest was slow and its product unimportant, and this in spite of the fact that excellent examples were set by both Helen Hunt Jackson and Adolf Bandelier .
