Fort Orange (PE), near the city of Recife, along the coast of the Northeast region. The history of the N ortheast and the Brazilian hinterland known as sertão begins along the coast. The Portuguese and Dutch colonizers that landed in this region in the 16th Century found that the zona-da-mata had abundant rainfall and fertile soil. The zona-da-mata corresponds to a narrow coastal strip varying between 50 and 120 km that extends from Rio Grande do Norte to southern Bahia. The Portuguese realized the enormous potential of this area, and during the early colonial period (1550-1700), when sugarcane and tobacco were Brazil\u27s chief exports, the region witnessed enormous expansion and wealth accumulation.Forte Laranja (PE), perto de Recife, na costa da Região Nordeste.
