Capoeira demonstration (Belo Horizonte). Surrounded by the cantadores and the instrumentistas a jogador attacks with a kick. Waiting at the foot of the instrumentistas are the next jogadores. Capoeira participants include the jogadores (players) or lutadores (fighters) and the instrumentistas (instrumentalists) or cantadores (singers). The latter form a semicircle or circle playing the various instruments and someone, usually the group leader, begins to chant one of the numerous capoeira songs. The others standing around the circle respond repeating the song\u27s chorus or the last words of the lines chanted by the lead singer. Squatting at the foot of the berimbau are the two silent jog adores which eye the lead singer and appear to be in deep concentration. During the preceiro (moment of prayer) they may be planning their strategy, meditating on the teachings of the songs or praying for protection against evil. The berimbau determine the rhythm and mood, and the crowd responds creating vibrations that seem to activate the energies of the two jogadores.
