When Juscelino Kubitschek became president in 1956, his motto was fifty years of progress in five. During his term as president, Brazilian industrialization expanded greatly as new highways, steel mills, automobile factories and hydroelectric plants were built. ln addition, he built Brasília, in the Central-West state of Goiás, as a catalyst to develop the vast interior of the nation.
