The Prediction of Academic Success in Engineering and Chemistry at The University of New Mexico

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between the marks earned in the beginning chemistry by freshmen students in the College of Engineering at the University of New Mexico and their scores on (a) The Iowa Placement Examination Chemistry Aptitude, (b) The University of New Mexico Mathematics Test, (c) The American Council on Education Psychological Examination, (d) the linguistic sub-test on The American Council on Education Psychological Examination, (e) the quantitative sub-test on The American Council on Education Psychological Examination, (f) the Cooperative English Test, and (g) the reading sub-test on the Cooperative English Test. This investigation should help to determine which of this group of tests would be most useful in eliminating those who would be potential failures before they enroll in the engineering curricula, and help in giving some indication of levels of success which can be expected from individual students before their actual course work is begun
