The plan for this study of the Amazonian family was conceived when the author was living in the Amazon valley. His life in Manaus and other towns in the Amazon valley continuously brought to his attention the problems of family organization. These problems were brought into focus by studies made be Gilberto Freyre, Brazilian sociologist, who had made, thirty years previously, a study of the northeastern family. Later, other studies of the Brazilian family were made. They suggested a similar study of the family in the Amazon valley
