Introduction: Anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies are found in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with HLA-DR beta chains encoding the shared epitope (SE) sequence. Citrullination increases self-antigen immunogenicity, through increased binding affinity to SE-containing HLA-DR molecules.
