Seasonal blooms of dinoflagellates occur in response to seasonal upwelling and typically succeed diatom blooms. High biomass, multispecies red tides result from concentration by various physical forces and are characteristically found in warm, stratified, nutrient-depleted water overlying cold, nutrient-rich bottom water.
